Community Development Fund Supports Fourteen More Projects
WHITEHORSE - Community Development Fund (CDF) has awarded funding to 14 projects across the territory. Over $166,000 in CDF Tier 1 funding was awarded this spring, and will support a variety of projects ranging from aquatics training to community literacy. All the funded projects are working to improve the quality of life for Yukoners.
"These projects are improving Yukoners quality of life in many different ways," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "A very impressive range of projects have received funding this summer and each one is an example of great community-based work being undertaken throughout Yukon."
CDF has contributed $16,057 towards Recreation & Parks Association of the Yukon's (RPAY) aquatics training program in five Yukon communities this summer. Last year this program provided aquatics certification for 27 participants from Yukon communities and re-certification for 57 participants.
"This training has allowed community participants to obtain and maintain the certifications required for employment as lifeguards and instructors at community swimming pools," RPAY Aquatics Coordinator Richele Bauer said. "These courses could not be offered in Yukon communities without the support of CDF."
The Yukon Literacy Coalition received $19,932 to support the Family Reading Tents initiative. The Family Reading Tents travel to Yukon communities encouraging family and community literacy.
"This funding means that the Family Reading Tent program will be in every Yukon community this summer," Yukon Literacy Coalition Executive Director Beth Mulloy said. "The tent has proven to be a creative and engaging way for families and community members to work together to improve their literacy skills."
Tier 1 level of funding is designed for applications of $20,000 or less with four application intakes each year. Community development funding is also available for larger projects, with Tier 2 awards for applications in the range of $20,001 to $75,000, and Tier 3 awards for applications over $75,000.
