Continued Funding Announced For Skills Canada Yukon

WHITEHORSE - Education Minister Patrick Rouble today announced nearly $75,000 in continued funding for Skills Canada Yukon.

"To ensure a healthy future for our economy, we need to engage youth in the skilled trades," Rouble said. "The skilled trades offer challenging work, job satisfaction, respect and good salaries. They represent a very good career choice that more young people need to know about before choosing the direction they'll take on the lifelong learning path."

Skills Canada Yukon funding announced today will support the operation of the Skills Centre on Platinum Road, 72 Skills Clubs throughout Yukon and a Young Men Exploring Trades Conference.

"The Young Men Exploring Trades Conference is a new direction for Skills Canada Yukon," Dan Curtis, executive director for Skills Canada Yukon said. "The conference is one way for us to target a specific demographic to interest them in the skilled trades."

Thanks to funding from the Yukon government, Yukon Women in Trades and Technology (YWITT) will once again present a similar conference this year for young women interested in exploring the trades.

"Skills Canada Yukon has always done an admirable job of raising awareness in youth about the skilled trades," Rouble added. "They provide a quality, hands-on experience that truly engages young people and allows them to fully consider skilled trades as a potential career."

Skills Canada Yukon funding is made available through the Yukon government's Community Training Funds. In addition to the Skills Canada Yukon funding, $75,000 was provided this year to Yukon Women in Trades and Technology.
