WHITEHORSE - As part of its ongoing efforts to preserve the natural and cultural resources of the Tombstone Territorial Park, Yukon Parks has initiated a new permit and registration system.
The permit and registration system will apply to camping in the backcountry in the park at Grizzly, Divide and Talus lakes.
"More and more campers are drawn to these spots in Tombstone Park every summer," Environment Minister Dennis Fentie said. "We are pleased to see Yukoners and visitors show such an interest and appreciation. However, we must ensure that the cultural and natural integrity of the park are preserved for generations to come."
A limit of 10 permits per night at each lake will be available. Each permit will allow the use of one tent pad per night, to a maximum of three nights.
Free of charge, campers can get the permits only by applying in person to the Tombstone Interpretive Centre no more than two days before the start of a trip. Campers are reminded to use a bear-proof food canister for all backcountry trips. These are available for a refundable deposit of $40 at the Interpretive Centre.
The registration and permitting system will not apply to camping in other areas of the backcountry.
Day hikers will not be affected.
