Arts Fund Supports Eleven More Projects
WHITEHORSE - Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor today announced that the fourth 2006-07 Arts Fund intake has resulted in 11 community groups and arts collectives sharing $116,300 in funding.
"Many projects are delivered by collectives, First Nations, community groups and youth organizations in addition to established arts groups," Taylor said. "The Yukon government is pleased to note that the number of projects submitted to the Arts Fund continues to increase each year, confirming genuine interest and support for this important funding made available to our arts and cultural community."
The March 2007 Arts Fund intake received 15 applications, with requests totalling approximately $258,000. Designed to assist with arts development, the Arts Fund also supports touring for professional artists to reach regional, national and international audiences.
The Lorne Mountain Community Association received $3,500 towards the Sunshine Summer Dance Season that highlights local young musicians and performers.
"The Lorne Mountain Community Association is a well established association with a proven track record of hosting community events that focus on promoting local music, art, sport and economic development," Lorne Mountain Community Association President Sheila Alexandrovich said. "With a strong volunteer base and successful partnerships with other not-for-profit groups, we are able to present outdoor performances in conjunction with our community centre. The Arts Fund assistance enables many programming projects to move forward, taking advantage of the performance pavilion put up last year."
The Arts Fund is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and communities in creative endeavors such as festivals, events, training, touring and art creation in all forms. The fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process.
In 2006-07, a total of 55 projects in 11 Yukon communities shared $519,600 in funding.
Applicants are encouraged to consult with the program officer before applying. For more information about the Arts Fund, phone 667-3535 or e-mail artsfund@gov.yk.ca.
