Fourteen Local Artists Receive Advanced Artist Awards

WHITEHORSE – Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor has announced that 14 Yukon artists will share $40,000 in Advanced Artist Awards to assist with their artistic development.

"The Yukon government is pleased to support the continuing development of artists who have specialized training and want to further improve their level of artistic expression," Taylor said. "Our artists play a significant role in shaping the rich cultural fabric of Yukon and help define who we are as Yukoners. We value their role and the contributions they make."

The Advanced Artist Award program is funded by Lotteries Yukon and is administered by the Department of Tourism and Culture. The program is assessed using the peer review process. Jury members for the spring intake were Sharon Shorty, Andrew Connors, Clea Ainsworth, Ken Anderson and B.J. Maclean.

One of the recipients to receive funding is the band Nemesis, awarded $2,000 to attend and perform in the 2007 B.C. Metal Show in Port Alberni, British Columbia this July. Nemesis was invited as a representative of heavy metal in Northern Canada.

Nemesis was formed in 2001. They have recorded three albums and have played numerous festivals, private gigs and bar shows throughout Yukon.

"Nemesis is very grateful to have received the Advanced Artist Award. It has always been a goal of ours to tour B.C. and this award is going to play a major role in helping us realize that dream," Yves Paradis of Nemesis said. "We hope to make the Yukon proud and we will endeavour to put on our best show each and every night."
