Yukon Government welcomes new RCMP commanding officer
WHITEHORSE – Department of Justice Minister Marian C. Horne would like to congratulate Whitehorse RCMP "M" Division detachment on the appointment of its new commanding officer.
Horne attended the ceremony and reception to introduce Superintendent Barry Harvie yesterday at the Canada Games Centre. Harvie transferred from "H" Division in Nova Scotia, where he served as commanding officer.
"The Department of Justice and the RCMP have a long history of partnering together to provide safety and security in Yukon. I would like to thank Chief Supt. Shewchuk for his exceptional contribution to Yukon. I look forward to continued good relations and welcome the RCMP’s new commanding officer to Whitehorse," Horne said.
The RCMP and Department of Justice are working together effectively to address issues of street crime caused by illegal drug and alcohol activities in Yukon communities.
The RCMP’s Street Crime Reduction Team and the Department of Justice’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhood (SCAN) unit have been working closely. In the last six months, the two units have shut down ongoing illegal drug activities in 19 Whitehorse residences. The RCMP has also arrested 34 drug dealers and made 108 charges since the Street Crime Reduction Team began operating April 1.
"I congratulate the RCMP in its efforts to reduce the amount of drug activity in Yukon. I fully expect that Yukon’s criminal element is getting the message that Yukoners do not condone this activity and this is not a place for them to conduct their business," Horne said.
"The government has placed a major emphasis on safer communities and neighbourhoods, and the RCMP are significant partners in this effort. Supt. Harvie brings many years of experience to the position and this experience can only further the strong partnership this government has with the RCMP in preventing crime throughout the territory," Horne added.
