Yukon Day Celebrated At The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre
WHITEHORSE – Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announces a joint-celebration to mark Yukon's 109th anniversary in the establishment of the Yukon Territory, and the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre's 10th anniversary.
"On June 13, we encourage Yukoners to reflect on the history and heritage of our land and our people as we celebrate the lives, traditions and cultures of all Yukoners, past and present," Taylor said.
Yukon Day marks Ottawa's passing of the Yukon Territory Act to constitute the Yukon Territory as separate and distinct from the Northwest Territories. The act provided for an appointed commissioner and council. The court system was restructured with the Yukon Territorial Court replacing the Court of the Yukon District.
Taylor will open the festivities on Wednesday, June 13 with a reception beginning at 10 a.m. at Beringia Interpretive Centre. There is free admission all day. The public is invited to share in the festivities with a movie presentation, atlatl demonstrations, an outdoor mini-safari, and cake with refreshments.
"The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre is in its 10th season of operation," Taylor said. "The centre offers wonderful exhibits, dioramas and displays that speak to this unique time in earth's history, the time of Beringia during the last great Ice Age. Those visiting the Beringia Interpretive Centre can learn about climate change and see the effects it can have on a global community."
The centre also offers information on archaeology, palaeontology and First Nation culture.
