Yukon Government Supports Safe Spaces And Programming For Youth
WHITEHORSE - Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon is pleased to announce that the Community Development Fund has awarded $638,619 of Tier 3 funding, supporting several initiatives that aim to create safe spaces and programming for youth.
"The Community Development Fund (CDF) allows us to provide outlets the youth need to grow into responsible citizens," Kenyon said. "This government is committed to working with Yukon communities and non-government organizations to support crime prevention initiatives, youth programs and to improve overall community safety."
The Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation received $83,385 to construct a community playground and skate park, providing a play structure for Dawson City youth to pursue active and healthy lifestyles through constructive outdoor activities.
"In Dawson City, we are struggling with a lack of facilities and this skate park will help fill the void," Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Lands and Housing Director Ed Kormendy said. "We are certainly appreciative that CDF has stepped up to the plate to help provide Dawson City youth with a safe space to gather."
Crime Prevention Yukon received $79,636 for a youth employment skills program that offers life skills and employment training programming to youth aged 18 to 22.
"This funding has afforded us the opportunity to adopt a whole-person approach to employment training," said Catherine Morgan, Project Manager at Crime Prevention Yukon. "This CDF funding is allowing us to implement one of the best capacity support programs out there. Providing training, counseling and support to youth will help them improve both their work and life skills."
The primary goal of the Community Development Fund is to fund projects and events that provide long-term benefit and value to Yukon communities. CDF provides Yukon groups, associations and organizations funding for projects and events that create jobs, contribute to community well-being, and bring social and economic benefits to Yukon residents.
The intake deadline for CDF funding was May 15. This intake is for both Tier 1 (up to $20,000) and Tier 2 ($20,001 to $75,000) projects.
