Yukon Government Contributes To Burwash Activity Centre
WHITEHORSE - Community Services Minister Glenn Hart has committed $850,000 towards the development of a new Youth-Elder Activity Centre for the community of Burwash Landing.
"This new Youth-Elder Activity Centre will fulfill a number of important roles in Burwash," Hart said. "Activity centers are gathering places for community meetings, they can also be used for training and other activities, and of course they are used for a wide range of indoor sporting activities - when completed, this facility will be a welcome asset for the region."
The new facility will provide a modern year-round venue for a variety of community activities as well as other programs, and will be the largest indoor gathering place along the northern portion of the Alaska Highway.
Kluane First Nation Chief Robert Dickson expressed his appreciation for the funding commitment for this important new building. "It is gratifying to watch this project come together with the financial support we have received from the Yukon government. The Youth-Elder Activity Centre will be a place where we can implement our youth programs and provide community-based activities that foster the well-being of Kluane First Nation children using the knowledge of our Elders."
The Department of Education has contributed $200,000 towards this project, and through the Community Development Fund, the Department of Economic Development has contributed $50,000 to the creation of this new facility.
