Yukon Government Provides Additional Support For Filmmakers
WHITHORSE - Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon has announced an increase in the maximum applicant eligibility under the Yukon Filmmakers Fund from $5,000 to $8,000, to further support increasing Yukon filmmakers’ skills and fostering the development and marketability of their projects.
"Yukon has a lot of very creative and talented filmmakers," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "By providing continued support to the film industry, our government is able to help Yukon filmmakers grow and thrive in the marketplace."
The Yukon Filmmakers Fund was created to help Yukon filmmakers by supporting film projects that increase their skills and experience in filmmaking. In 2006, a total of $30,477 was awarded to nine Yukon filmmakers under the Filmmakers Fund.
Yukon filmmaker Richard Lawrence has received Yukon Filmmaker Fund support for several of his projects. Lawrence believes that the fund is vital to Yukon filmmakers due to the complexity of the filmmaking process and the increasingly expensive costs of undertaking a project.
"The Yukon Filmmakers Fund is an incentive. It gives filmmakers encouragement and proves that there is support out there for our industry," Lawrence said. "This fund allows us to develop talent and to begin to export cultural products from Yukon to the rest of Canada."
The Yukon Filmmakers Fund is awarded twice each year, in June and in December, to eligible Yukon filmmakers who submit proposals. The projects are reviewed by a jury of film-industry peers, using established criteria focused on projects that demonstrate a likelihood of success.
The next Yukon Filmmakers Fund deadline is June 1. Learn more by visiting the Yukon Film & Sound Commission website at www.reelyukon.com.
