Yukon Provides Additional Funding For First Nations Training Corps

WHITEHORSE - Glenn Hart, minister responsible for the Public Service Commission, has announced that the Yukon government will be providing $300,000 in additional funding for the First Nations Training Corps (FNTC).

The FNTC provides Yukon First Nation people with one to two years of on-the-job training in the Yukon public service.

"The popularity of the FNTC is due to the program's proven record of success, its use as a succession planning component in the Yukon government and the desire of Yukon First Nation governments to build self-government capacity," Hart said.

The added investment will fund five new positions. These positions are managed by the representative Public Service consultant in the Workplace Diversity Employment Office which is part of the Corporate Human Resource Services branch in the Public Service Commission. First Nation governments have co-sponsored placements since 2000.

Funding covers program administration and delivery as well as salaries and benefits for FNTC placements. With the infusion of new money, the total program budget will be $783,000.

The FNTC supports the government's land claim and employment equity commitments by contributing to making the Yukon public service representative of the people it serves. Currently, 11 people are in the FNTC. Since 2000, 51 people have benefited from FNTC placements; 35 have involved First Nation sponsorship.
