Premier Announces Members Of Electoral District Boundaries Commission
WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie has announced the members of the next electoral district boundaries commission in accordance with the Elections Act.
The Commissioner in Executive Council has, on the advice of the senior judge of the Supreme Court, appointed Mr. Justice Leigh Gower to be the chair of the commission.
The Commissioner in Executive Council has also appointed three members to the commission as nominated by the leaders of the three political parties represented in the Legislative Assembly. They are Doug Phillips (Yukon Party), Ione Christensen (Liberal Party), and Dave Hobbis (New Democratic Party).
The fifth member of the commission is the Chief Electoral Officer, Jo-Ann Waugh. The Elections Act states that the Chief Electoral Officer sits on the commission without appointment.
These appointments of the commission are in effect April 9. The purpose of a commission is to review the existing electoral district boundaries and to make proposals as to the boundaries, number and names of the electoral districts that should be in place at the time of the next general election.
The commission will produce an interim report within seven months, by November 9, at which time public hearings will be held on the findings of the report. A final report will be submitted to the Legislative Assembly within the following five months.
An electoral district boundaries commission is appointed following every second general election.
