Arts Fund Supports Yukon Arts And Cultural Projects
WHITEHORSE - Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced that 14 community groups and arts collectives will share $145,100 in funding made available through the Arts Fund.
The December 2006 Arts Fund intake received 15 applications, with requests totalling $193,948.
"The Yukon government is proud to support community groups and collectives pursuing creative endeavours that enrich our lives and our communities," Taylor said. "Artistic expression offers people a way to connect with each other - to celebrate our differences, similarities and achievements."
The Arts Fund is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and communities in creative endeavors such as festivals, events, training, touring and art creation in all forms. The fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process.
"The Vuntut Gwitchin are appreciative of the support from the Arts Fund for the Old Crow Fiddle Festival, a three-day event to be scheduled this spring," Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Chief Joe Linklater said. "This partnership provides an opportunity for local and regional musicians to showcase their talent, enhance interest in Athabascan fiddle music, allow for music instruction to our youth, and keep Gwitchin and non-Gwitchin folks dancing for hours."
The next deadline for Arts Fund applications is March 15. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the program officer before applying, by telephone 667-3535 or e-mail artsfund@gov.yk.ca.
