Yukon Government Supports Gathering Of Northern Nations At Canada Winter Games

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is contributing $100,000 in support of the Gathering of Northern Nations Aboriginal Tradeshow and Cultural Expo, announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor.

"We have representation from Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories at the Gathering of Northern Nations," Taylor said. "This is the first time an aboriginal cultural event of this magnitude has happened in the North. The Yukon government is proud to be a contributing sponsor to this wonderful cultural achievement and we congratulate the organizers and participants who have come together to make this event a success."

The Gathering of Northern Nations Aboriginal Tradeshow and Cultural Expo takes place March 1 - 4. The Yukon First Nations Tourism Association has partnered with First Nations from across the North to participate in a multi-disciplinary exposition that will showcase and celebrate the diversity of northern aboriginal communities, businesses, arts, crafts, performers and culture.

Taylor, speaking on behalf of the Yukon government, will welcome guests and the public to the four day extravaganza that will include culinary arts and works of creative expression such as drumming, throat singing, storytelling, dancing, sculpture, beadwork, leather goods and more.

The $100,000 from the Yukon government is comprised of $30,000 through Culture Quest and another $70,000 in direct support to the tradeshow and cultural exposition.

"The Gathering of Northern Nations offers the public the opportunity to be a part of Inuit, Dene and northern First Nation cultures that are integral to the fabric of Canada's shared identity," Taylor said. "It's an opportunity for participants to showcase their talents and the traditional knowledge and wisdom of their elders to all who are interested in sharing in this uniquely northern heritage."
