Education Launches Yukon-Themed Story Book For Classrooms
WHITEHORSE - Education Minister Patrick Rouble announced today that the Department of Education has launched a Yukon-authored and illustrated Grade 7-9 reader for classrooms called Lost in Time.
"Like the Yukon First Nation-themed Early Reader books that the Department of Education published in October 2005, in cooperation with Eaglecrest Books, we saw the publication of Lost in Time as an important step toward creating more relevant and engaging reading materials for our Yukon schools," Education Minister Patrick Rouble said.
Lost in Time, authored by Liesel Briggs and illustrated by Andrew Sharp, is the story of a young snowboarder, Sam, who travels back in time to various places throughout the Yukon. Sam meets many interesting characters and faces many challenges with the help of her Grandpa Jake.
"One of the most important things to know about the book Lost in Time is that it was created especially for reluctant readers at the Grade 7-9 level," Terry Markley, curriculum consultant at the Department of Education, said. "Students will be able to see themselves in this story and will really be engaged by the characters and the illustrations. This is particularly important for students who may need a little encouragement to sit down and practice their reading skills."
"Lost in Time is the result of the hard work of many, many people," Rouble said. "I'd like to thank the author, Liesel Briggs, and the illustrator, Andrew Sharp, for bringing this unique Yukon story to life. I would also like to thank the curriculum staff at the Department of Education for bringing this project to a successful completion."
"This book is a welcome addition to our collection of materials and resources that are inspired by the Yukon's people, culture and geography," Rouble added.
