Yukon Regulates Physiotherapists Under Health Professions Act
WHITEHORSE - Yukon's physiotherapists will be the first health professionals to become regulated under the Health Professions Act. Community Services Minister Glenn Hart announced today that the April 1 change also means Yukon is the first territory to join with the Canadian provinces in regulating the practice of physiotherapy.
"The new physiotherapists regulation supports the government's priority to ensure Yukoners receive the best possible health service and hospital care," Hart said.
The Physiotherapists Regulation will guarantee that physiotherapists are accredited professionals, adhere to professional practice standards, and that ethical and educational requirements are consistent with those throughout other Canadian jurisdictions.
"I am pleased that Yukon is moving forward in regulating our health care professions," Health and Social Minister Brad Cathers said. "By accrediting physiotherapists, Yukoners can be assured that they will be receiving treatment of the highest standards."
Local physiotherapists have been very involved in drafting the regulation that will govern the profession, and much credit goes to them for being the leaders. The regulation was drafted cooperatively by a working group comprised of practicing physiotherapists and representatives from the departments of Health and Social Services, Community Services and Justice. Consultation with the general public and medical community provided further insight from stakeholders with a vested interest in the governance of physiotherapists in Yukon.
