Yukon Premier To Discuss Climate Change With Federal Ministers
WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie is travelling to Ottawa this week to meet with the Hon. John Baird, federal minister of Environment and the Hon. Jim Prentice, federal minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
Climate change will be at the top of agenda when Fentie meets with both the federal minister of Environment and the minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development on Feb. 8. "The Yukon government is very concerned about the impacts of climate change on the territory," Fentie said.
"I want to deliver the message that although we are pleased to see the federal government take action on climate change, their approach must also include adaptation initiatives," Fentie added. "Research and development related to climate change impacts and adaptation are an important part of adapting to climate change.
I will be talking about our interest in pursuing a partnership with the federal government to develop the Climate Change Research Centre of Excellence and the Cold Climate Technology and Innovation Center in Yukon, and the ongoing funding needs for the Northern Climate Exchange.
While in Ottawa, the Premier will also participate in the Council of the Federation (CoF) teleconference meeting on Feb. 7 with his provincial and territorial counterparts.
