Washer Rebate Program Promotes Energy Conservation

WHITEHORSE  - Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang has announced that Yukoners who purchase an ENERGY STAR® qualified front loading washing machine between January 1 and March 15, 2007 can receive a cash rebate from the Government of Yukon.

"The Washer Rebate Program is an example of how the Government of Yukon supports and promotes energy conservation initiatives," Lang said.  "By switching to energy efficient appliances, Yukoners will save energy as a community and money as individuals."

Energy, Mines and Resources' Energy Solutions Centre is offering the Yukon Washer Rebate Program as their latest effort to help Yukoners conserve energy and understand the cost and the environmental benefits of energy efficiency.  The rebate program is part of a series of initiatives offered with assistance from Natural Resources Canada.

To receive the rebate, purchasers of ENERGY STAR qualified washers complete an application form and send it with their proof of purchase to the Yukon Energy Solutions Centre by March 31, 2007.  Consumers can pick up a list of eligible washers, as well as the application form, from participating retailers or they can access the information online at http://www.nrgsc.yk.ca/.

Yukon residents who install a new ENERGY STAR washer in a community, powered by hydroelectricity, are eligible to receive a $75 cash rebate.  The rebate is $125 for residents who install the new washers in Yukon’'s diesel-powered communities, namely Beaver Creek, Burwash Landing, Destruction Day, Old Crow, Pelly Crossing, Upper Liard and Watson Lake, where the washers provide the additional benefit of saving greenhouse gas emissions.

For more information on the Yukon Washer Rebate Program or other energy conservation strategies, people are invited to contact the Energy Solutions Centre at (867) 393-7062 or toll-free outside of Whitehorse at 1-800-667-5811, local 7062.
