Outstanding Yukon Students To Be Honoured At Commissioner's Levee

WHITEHORSE - Commissioner Geraldine Van Bibber will present a number of Yukon students with awards for excellence at the annual Commissioner's New Year's Levee.

"These students, who have worked so hard, deserve to be recognized for their achievements," Van Bibber said. "Honouring our next generation of scholars and leaders is a fitting way to welcome in the New Year."

The Governor General's Academic Medal is one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive. The medal is awarded to the Yukon student who graduates with the highest standing in their school, as determined by the final marks on their transcript of grades.

At the levee, Commissioner Van Bibber will present the Governor General’s Academic Award to the following students:

  • Jessica Surber - F.H Collins Secondary School, Whitehorse
  • Terra-Lynn Asp - Tantalus School, Carmacks
  • Sheena McGinty - J.V. Clark School, Mayo
  • Lauren McGinty - Eliza Van Bibber School, Pelly Crossing
  • Nicolaas Jansen - Robert Service School, Dawson City
  • Fanny Herry-Saint Onge - École Émilie-Tremblay, Whitehorse
  • Kyle Nadeau - St. Elias Community School, Haines Junction
  • Janna Tait - Vanier Catholic Secondary School, Whitehorse
  • Celine Skerget - Watson Lake Secondary School
  • Alisa Hackney - Porter Creek Secondary School, Whitehorse

Three young people will also be honoured with a Duke of Edinburgh Award:

  • Mathew Wolsynuk of Whitehorse - silver level
  • Robert Leschert of Whitehorse - silver level
  • William Thibodeau of Whitehorse – bronze level

The Commissioner’s Office would also like to offer congratulations to Karen van der Laars of Whitehorse, who received a Commissioner's Award for Bravery as well as the St. John’s Bravery Award at a ceremony held December 15 at the Commissioner's office. Ms. van der Laars acted above and beyond her civic duty by coming to the aid of a person by dealing with a situation and using her first aid training. She chose to receive her medal in a private ceremony.

The Commissioner's Levee takes place January 1, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Yukon Government Administration building, 2071 Second Avenue in Whitehorse.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy New Year, and to extend an invitation to all Yukoners to take part in the New Year’s Levee on Monday,” Van Bibber said.
