Arts Fund Supports Community Cultural Projects

WHITEHORSE - Twelve applicants will share $125,000 in funding made available through the Arts Fund announced Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor.

The Arts Fund supports a wide array of arts activities throughout Yukon. The fund's March 15 intake received 15 applications with requests totalling approximately $229,000.

"The Arts Fund gives Yukon community groups the opportunity to move forward with projects that contribute to our collective creative spirit," Taylor said.

The Arts Fund is an applicant-driven funding program that supports artists and communities in creative endeavors such as festivals, events, training, touring and art creation in all forms. The fund is adjudicated four times a year by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council in an arms-length process.

The Society of Yukon Artists of Native Ancestry (SYANA) is receiving $3,500 for a First Nation art exhibition Masks: An Historical to Present Perspective. Speaking on behalf of SYANA, Ukjese Van Kampen said, "We are pleased to receive this funding because it means we can move forward with the accompanying catalogue that adds an educational component to the exhibition while contributing to the preservation of Yukon First Nations culture."

"I am especially pleased to see that communities throughout the Yukon are supporting this successful arts funding program with diverse and interesting project proposals," Taylor said.
