Yukon Sound Recording Artists Receive Financial Support

WHITEHORSE – Nine Yukon sound recording professionals have been awarded a total of $26,370 through the Department of Economic Development, specifically the Film & Sound Commission’s Professional Sound Recording Program.

“We have an incredible pool of talent in Yukon’s sound recording industry,” Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. “These awards are an investment by the Yukon government that will not only promote the industry itself, but will also serve to assist us in diversifying and building a sustainable economy for the Yukon as a whole.”

“We are pleased to see that one of the successful applicants for Professional Demo Recording in the first intake has completed her demo project and has now successfully applied for a full-length recording,” Yukon Film & Sound Commissioner Margarita Ramon said. “The program is working.”

Ken Hermanson, Derek Holmes, Brian Foulds, Seaweed Music, Barbara Chamberlin and Soir de Semaine are fund recipients of the Professional Demo Recording, two songs or five minutes.

Receiving funding under the Professional Sound Recording component, six songs or 20 minutes, are Kim Beggs, Kate Weekes and Grant Simpson.

Yukon sound recording projects are reviewed by a jury made up of industry professionals from outside the territory. The jury follows established criteria focused on projects that demonstrate a likelihood of success.

The Sound Recording Program is designed to increase the growth and development of the Yukon sound recording industry by developing domestic sound recording skills and experience, and by supporting the growth of the Yukon sound recording industry.

May 1 is the deadline for the next Sound Recording Program intake.  The Yukon Film & Sound Commission and Music Yukon have now established May 1 and November 1 as the two annual intake dates to this program. For more information, search http://www.reelyukon.com/ or phone 667-5400.
