Final Module Placed For 2007 Canada Winter Games Athletes Village

WHITEHORSE - A special ceremony was held at Yukon College today to mark the placement of the final prefabricated housing module on the Athletes Village for the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Draped in flags and banners, module number 141 was lifted into its place by ATCO Structures, the builder of the housing units, completing a major phase of the Athletes Village construction project.

"This is a milestone that reflects positively on Yukon ingenuity, skills and teamwork resulting in a project that is on time as promised," Premier Dennis Fentie said. "Under a year ago we were announcing this project adjacent to the Yukon College. There are now two impressive buildings that will fulfill our short-term needs for housing the 2007 Canada Winter Games athletes. After the games, they will provide much needed accommodation for student families and affordable housing for Yukoners for many years to come."

A number of Yukon firms have been directly involved in developing the Athletes Village project with over one hundred Yukon workers employed on this project to date. More workers will be busy on the site finishing up over the spring and summer.

"I am very impressed by the progress on this project to date," Whitehorse mayor Ernie Bourassa said. "The clock is ticking ever closer towards the opening ceremonies and the completion of the Athletes Village appears to be one less thing to be concerned about."

"The Yukon government is doing an excellent job with this project," Piers McDonald, Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games Host Society president, said. "They got right to work in finding a solution that met both the criteria of the Canada Games Council and provided additional value by having a use for the facilities following the games. This new facility will be a great benefit to both the college and the community."

Work on the Athletes Village is continuing with mechanical and electrical work underway and work on insulation and siding expected to follow.
