New Sound Recording Program Adding Another Intake Early Next Year
WHITEHORSE - The Department of Economic Development and the Yukon Film & Sound Commission announced that the new Sound Recording Program has awarded a total of $16,766.25 to Yukon sound recording professionals resulting from its first round of applications.
"We are pleased we received such a high caliber of applications from Yukon musicians and studios and we wish the successful applicants the best of luck in their endeavours," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said.
The Sound Recording Program is designed to enhance the growth and development of the Yukon sound recording industry by developing domestic sound recording skills and experience, and by supporting the growth of the Yukon sound recording industry.
"We've added a second intake of Feb. 15, 2006. This is extraordinary because it's only a few months after the first intake in November. We want the community to know these new funds are now available, and another intake in February is one way to promote it," Yukon Film & Sound Commissioner Margarita Ramon added.
There are two components to the Sound Recording Program, which include a demo recording fund and a sound recording fund.
The Professional Demo Recording fund contributes to projects with a minimum of two tracks or five minutes. Demo recordings are commonly used for getting festival gigs, shopping the songs for publishing, and as a step toward producing a full-length CD.
The Professional Sound Recording fund contributes to full-length projects with a minimum of six tracks or twenty minutes. Sound recording projects are reviewed by a jury made up of industry professionals from outside the territory. The jury follows established criteria focused on projects that demonstrate a likelihood of success.
Professional Demo Recording funds were awarded to Danette Readman, Heather Loewen, Kate Weekes, and Michael Brooks. The two projects awarded the Professional Sound Recording fund were Caribou Records for Valle Son, and Buckeroo Music for the Gordie Tentrees Band.
Music Yukon executive director Mark Smith expressed his delight with the intake results. "These awards were juried outside of the Yukon and demonstrate the great talent of Yukon’s musicians and recording industry."
The next sound recording intake deadline is Feb.15, 2006. The Film & Sound Commissioner encourages Yukon musicians, who have professional recording projects in the works, to apply. An application form is available online at www.reelyukon.com or by calling the Film & Sound Commission at 667-5400 or toll-free at 1-800-661-0408, extension 5400.
