Local Artists Receive Advanced Artists Award

WHITEHORSE – Funding totalling $40,000 to assist with artistic development in areas of training, art creation, travel or showcasing talent is being shared by 11 Yukon artists, announced Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor today.

"Advanced artists are those who have specialized training in their field and are recognized by their peers," Taylor said. "In support of their efforts to continue evolving as professional artists, the Yukon government is pleased to be able to provide funding in the performing, literary and visual art disciplines."

One of the 11 artists to receive funding is Danette Readman. She began studying classical guitar at 13, which lead her to Brandon University’s prestigious School of Music where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Readman has lived in the Yukon for more than 10 years, and this is her first Advanced Artist Award.

"It fills me with encouragement and inspiration to be recognized and honoured by such a strong and talented jury," Readman said. “I want to thank them for giving me this opportunity. It means I will be able to work towards my goal as a professional musician, as I develop my skills as a guitarist and composer."

Readman's award will be used to compose and develop a sonata for solo classical guitar, adding to the growing repertoire of original modern and classical music being developed in the Yukon.

The Advanced Artist Award program is funded by Lotteries Yukon and is administered by the Department of Tourism and Culture. The program is assessed using the peer review process. This session the jury consisted of Duane Ghastant’ Aucoin, Barbara Chamberlin, Marcelle Dubé, Deborah Turner-Davis and Janice Brodie.
