Minister Edzerza Presents Yukoners' Cheque To Red Cross

WHITEHORSE - On behalf of Yukoners who donated money at territorial liquor stores, Minister John Edzerza presented a cheque for $2,385.20 to the Canadian Red Cross for the victims of hurricane Katrina.

Representing Jim Kenyon, the minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation, Minister Edzerza presented the cheque to Amar Dhillon, president of the Northern BC/Yukon regional council of the Canadian Red Cross on Friday, Oct. 21 during a bi-annual meeting of Yukon liquor store managers in Whitehorse.

The minister recognized the efforts of Yukon liquor store managers and their staff. "Through your initiative, you have helped improve conditions for people whose lives have been turned upside down by hurricane Katrina," Edzerza said.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive and costly natural disasters in the history of the United States. The Yukon Liquor Corporation responded promptly by putting up collection boxes at its head office and in all liquor stores across the Yukon. In total, Yukoners generously donated $2,385.20 between Sept. 2 and Oct. 15.

The Yukon government earlier donated $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts.
