Government Of Yukon To Commence Building Of Carmacks School

WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie announced today that the Government of Yukon will commence building the new school in Carmacks.

"This government is pleased to be able to provide the students of Carmacks with the best educational environment possible," Fentie said. "A new school in Carmacks will enhance the community’s journey down the road of lifelong learning."

In addition to housing enough room for day-to-day operations of kindergarten to Grade 12, the government is also including additional space in the design of the new building.

"I wish to make it clear that the government is not putting Yukon College into the school," Fentie said. "Back in December of 2004, I reached an understanding with Chief Skookum and put it in writing that we will build a school in Carmacks, and that during the construction phase both the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation and the community can work together to decide what they want in the extra space."

"Building the new school in Carmacks demonstrates this government's commitment to providing quality education for all Yukon students," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "Through considerable investments in facilities, curriculum and programs, this government is building a public education system that will serve the needs and aspirations of all Yukoners."

Construction of the new school is scheduled to begin this fall.
