Yukon Will Support Red Cross Katrina Relief

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has offered further support to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts through a $25,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross, Premier Dennis Fentie announced today.

"Right now, thousands of people are in desperate need of basic shelter, medical care, food and water," Fentie said. "Our hearts go out to those families, and the Yukon is committed to helping them in any way we can."

Jim Kenyon, the minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corp. announced the Yukon government has also placed collection boxes at all government liquor stores to collect money for the Canadian Red Cross.

Yukoners wishing to donate can also contact the Red Cross directly by phone, mail or on-line. Visit www.redcross.ca or phone 1-800-418-1111 for more information.

Fentie also urged Yukoners to think about emergency planning here at home.

"Hurricane Katrina is a sobering reminder that emergencies can quickly change our lives forever. I encourage all Yukoners to make sure their homes and families are prepared for emergency situations," Fentie said.

More information on family emergency planning is available online at www.community.gov.yk.ca/emo/, or by contacting the Yukon Emergency Measures Organization at 667-5220 in Whitehorse, or toll free in Yukon at 1-800-661-0408, ext. 5220.
