Premier Extends Support For Katrina Victims

WHITEHORSE - Premier Dennis Fentie says that the Yukon will do whatever it can to help Americans affected by Hurricane Katrina.

"On behalf of all Yukoners, we give our deepest sympathy to those who have lost loved ones in this terrible disaster," Fentie said. "To our American neighbours, particularly those who are currently without homes, food or water, our thoughts are with you. The Yukon is ready to offer whatever assistance we can."

The Yukon government will work with the federal government to determine how Yukon can help with immediate relief or the long-term rebuilding effort.

The Premier is also encouraging all Yukoners to reduce their fuel consumption in the coming weeks, in keeping with the federal government's similar request today.

"Some impacts of this disaster are affecting all of North America. Fuel supply is one of them, and individual Yukoners can do their part to help by reducing their fuel consumption until things return to normal," Fentie said.

Yukoners who believe they may have family or friends in the affected area can contact Foreign Affairs at 1-800-387-3124 for information. Canadian citizens in the US who require assistance should call 1-888-949-9993.
