Applicants Receive Tier 1 Community Development Funding

WHITEHORSE - A total of 18 applications have received $259,252 in community development funding for projects in six communities.

"The Yukon government is pleased to support such an array of community projects that promote wellness, culture, heritage and education," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said.

The Liard Aboriginal Women's Society (LAWS) has been granted $20,000 to train interested community members in the practice of alternative energy healing, a process that uses traditional First Nations methods and helps healing by drawing on the inner strength of the individual.

"We're really excited about this training," LAWS executive director Anne Maje-Raider said. "It will be really valuable in our community."

Yukon Family Services Association received $9,034 for its Mother Goose Teacher Apprenticeship, a session to be offered by a nationally recognized trainer to 20 participants in Whitehorse and three other communities in early 2006.

The Mother Goose program brings together mothers and their babies for rhymes, songs and stories that promote bonding and provides opportunities to socialize.

"Parents gain skills and confidence, which helps to create positive family relations during children's important early years," Yukon Family Services Association executive director Marilyn Wolovich said. "The new skills and insights gained benefit the whole family."

Tier 1 funding is made available for applications up to $20,000.

Learn more about the Community Development Fund and how it may benefit your community projects by visiting the Yukon government website: www.gov.yk.ca.

Applications for the next Tier 2 intake, $20,001 to $75,000, will be accepted until Sept. 15, 2005.
