WHITEHORSE - The departments of Highways and Public Works and Community Services have awarded contracts valued at almost $10 million for three highway construction projects and three Copper Ridge projects.
"We are pleased to see so many contracts going to Yukon companies and so many dollars at work in the territory," Highways and Public Works Minister Glenn Hart said. "The Yukon government aims to build a revitalized economy by putting people and communities to work."
Golden Hill Ventures Ltd. will receive $4,950,000 for road re-construction between Marshall Creek to Pine Lake - km 1616 to km 1627 - of the Alaska Highway. This is the final section between Watson Lake and Haines Junction to be upgraded to current standards. The work is being cost-shared with the Government of Canada under the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund. Forty to 50 people are expected to work on the project to the end of August.
Skookum Asphalt Ltd. received $900,000 for Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST) work on a recently re-constructed section of the Alaska Highway - km 1749 to km 1759 - just south of Burwash. This work is part of the ongoing Shakwak project, to reconstruct the north Alaska Highway, and is largely funded by the State of Alaska. This job will employ 10 to 15 people and is expected to be completed by end of July. Skookum Asphalt Ltd. was also awarded $850,000 for roadwork in the Copper Ridge Subdivision.
Summit Aggregates Inc. received $414,000 to produce crushed aggregate reserves along the Alaska Highway. These reserves will be used for highway construction, resurfacing, and maintenance for several years. Ten to 12 people will be employed over the work season.
Norcope Enterprises Ltd. will receive $2,623,000 to supply and install underground water and sewer services at Copper Ridge Subdivision - Stage 11 in Whitehorse. This work is expected to last four months, providing employment for 10 to 12 people.
Castle Rock Enterprises was awarded $171,000 to install power, telephone and cable TV/internet infrastructure to the Copper Ridge Subdivision - Stage 11 in Whitehorse. This contract will employ eight to 10 people for approximately six weeks.
