Youth Leadership Training Workshop Promotes Valuable Skills
WHITEHORSE - Learning the value of leadership and gaining practical skills to deliver program activities in their communities are the goals of young people gathering from across the territory July 4 to 6.
"This year, with the help of a number of facilitators in their peer group, youth will address conflict resolution and self-care," Premier Dennis Fentie said. "These three days are designed to provide valuable tools and techniques to help our young people set positive goals and unleash their leadership power."
The seventh annual Youth Leadership Training Workshop is taking place over three days at the Council of Yukon First Nations building in Whitehorse. Registration begins July 4 at 3 p.m.; the workshops begin that day at 4 p.m. and run until 4 p.m. July 6.
The workshop is sponsored by the Yukon government's Youth Directorate and provides youth with training opportunities to gain leadership skills to take back to their communities and share with other young people.
The workshop is also supported by the Council of Yukon First Nations, which provided the venue, and staff from the Jeux du Canada Games 2007, Crime Prevention Yukon and Bringing Youth Towards Equality, which are helping with workshop facilitation and logistical support.
"We are also offering an optional first aid course on Thursday for those who are not already certified," Meghan Hajash, the coordinator for the Youth Leadership Training Workshop said. "This practical experience will provide unique learning opportunities in a supportive and peer-oriented environment."
