Sport And Recreation Grants Announced

WHITEHORSE – Yukon Sport and Recreation groups will receive grants totaling $795,450 for 2005/06 efforts announced Glenn Hart, minister responsible for Community Services and Lotteries Yukon.

"These grants are very important to support sport organizations and their volunteers engaged in the delivery of sport, recreation and active living programs," Minister of Community Services and Lotteries Yukon Glenn Hart said.

"Volunteers are vital for events such as the up and coming Canada Winter Games and for Yukoners to enjoy physically active lifestyles. Funding their work is an investment in long-term health and growth of Yukon people and communities."

Twenty-three Yukon Sport Governing Bodies will receive $464,450 and six Yukon Special Recreation groups will receive $154,000.  Another $47,000 has been allocated to the High Performance Athlete, Coach and Official Program and Sport Yukon will receive $130,000.  The funding to the Sport Governing Bodies includes $12,400 designed to prepare athletes for participation in the 2005 Canada Summer Games in Saskatchewan.

Funding for the annual grants is made possible by a revenue sharing agreement between Yukon Lottery Commission and Government of Yukon.  The grants are adjudicated by the Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee and administered by Community Services.

"All of the groups receiving funding provide programs and services that enhance the quality of life for Yukoners," said Yukon Recreation Advisory Committee chair Peter Grundmanis.  "We are pleased to make these resources available to support the excellent work being done by these and the other dedicated volunteers in the sport and recreation system in the Yukon."
