CDF Awards Tier 1 Funding To Community Projects
WHITEHORSE - Economic Development's Community Development Fund has disbursed $199,018 to 16 community projects approved under Tier 1 criteria.
Tier 1 funding is for project applicants seeking financial contributions of $20,000 or less.
"Money given to these projects represents the Yukon government's commitment to health, culture, recreation and stewardship in all communities," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said. "Yukoners will benefit from initiatives like youth empowerment programs, sports facilities and parks upgrade and the enhancement of First Nations' cultural sites and programs."
Challenge-Community Vocational Alternatives was awarded $18,056 for the construction of an addition to its downtown Whitehorse building to become a facility for training the disabled.
"This is the first step in something that's really going to respond to the needs of our community," Rick Goodfellow, the Challenge-Community Vocational Alternatives executive director said. "Everybody's going to benefit from this."
The Frostbite Music Society received $6,265 for phase one of renovations to its Chambers House project. Built in downtown Whitehorse in 1925, the Chambers House was moved to a storage compound in 1995, and is now awaiting relocation to Shipyards Park where the society plans to use it for office space.
"The monies that we are receiving will help us with the feasibility portion of our project," Brenda Barnes, the Frostbite Music Society general manager said. "It's very exciting to receive the support of the Yukon government for this project."
The next Community Development Fund intake will be July 15 for project applications of $20,000 or less.
