Second Chance Students Re-Engaged To Graduate

WHITEHORSE - This year the Individual Learning Centre, Yukon’s newest school, will be handing out diplomas to nine graduates.

"This government is committed to providing the best education opportunities for all Yukoners and opening up the Individual Learning Centre was a big part of our plan for education," Education Minister John Edzerza said. "The Individual Learning Centre provides students, who have dropped out of school, with a second chance to succeed."

Last February, the Yukon government opened the Individual Learning Centre to encourage drop-out students to return to their studies. There are about 75 students currently taking courses at the Individual Learning Centre and there will be nine graduates this year.

"We are immensely proud of what our students have achieved since February," said Bill Bennett, principal at the Individual Learning Centre. "I am pleased that they have the commitment to attend the Individual Learning Centre to complete their graduation program. This will open many doors for their future."

"I commend the graduating students for choosing the path of lifelong learning—they've made a very smart decision to come back to school to finish their secondary education," said Edzerza. "Congratulations to the first graduating class of the Individual Learning Centre, and congratulations to all Yukon graduates—the class of 2005!"
