Wildfire Reporting Number To Be Displayed On Payphones Throughout Territory

WHITEHORSE - Northwestel has partnered with the Yukon government's Wildland Fire Management program to make it easier for Yukoners and visitors to report forest fires.

Stickers in English, French and German will be posted on payphones throughout the Yukon to advise the public to report all wildfires via the dedicated toll-free forest fire reporting number 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).

"The early detection of a forest fire is crucial to help fire fighters to protect lives, communities, and property," Community Services Minister Glenn Hart said. "The public plays a very valuable role in detecting forest fires. Every year a large percentage of Yukon forest fires are reported by travelling public."

"We greatly appreciate Northwestel's help to get this important public safety reminder across the territory," Hart added, noting that the stickers will serve as a quick reminder of who to call in order to report sightings of smoke or flames.

"Northwestel is pleased to assist in providing this information for all people in the Yukon," Northwestel President and CEO Paul Flaherty said. "Placing information stickers on our payphones is a small measure, but we support any steps to make it easier for people to report a fire."

The stickers will be placed on Northwestel payphones this summer.
