Yukon Substance Abuse Summit To Start Action Plan

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon's first Substance Abuse Summit will be held June 6 - 7 in Whitehorse at the Yukon Convention Centre.

Premier Dennis Fentie announced today that his government is fulfilling its commitment to bring governments and community organizations together to examine how they can address drug and alcohol abuse in the territory.

"Drug and alcohol abuse is a serious matter," Fentie said. "This summit is an important step down a path that will help individuals heal from alcohol and drug abuse and lead to healthier and stronger communities."

The summit will bring together over 100 representatives of First Nations, municipal, territorial and federal governments, community associations and non-government organizations. Speakers from both inside and outside the Yukon will help participants focus on identifying strategies for an action plan.

There will also be a public meeting held June 6 at 7 p.m. featuring panel presentations by some of the day-time session speakers, followed by a question and answer session. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Those wishing to learn more on this issue can visit the Web site at: www.substanceabuse.gov.yk.ca or e-mail requests or comments to substanceabuse@gov.yk.ca.

The summit is the starting point in the development of a Yukon Substance Abuse Action Plan that will help guide the government’s response to substance abuse in the territory. It will also help all stakeholders engage communities in a fully integrated response to drug and alcohol abuse.
