Community Development Fund Awards Tier 3 Projects

WHITEHORSE - The Community Development Fund is contributing $358,000 towards four projects approved under Tier 3 criteria.

"The Tier 3 submissions are the largest projects, and each has benefits that serve the community in a number of ways. From daycares to traveling exhibits and cultural festivals, a wide variety of positive community projects are being funded," Economic Development Minister Jim Kenyon said.

"Children need a supportive, stimulating, consistent and safe environment for quality childcare. This generous CDF contribution will help our community to construct a long overdue daycare facility," Nacho Nyak Dun funding coordinator Darlene Hutton said. "We plan to also use the daycare for an after-school tutoring program for all students, from Grades 1 through 12, who need extra assistance. We anticipate employing several construction workers for the project, in addition to four full-time and two part-time employees at the daycare."

Community development funding also went to the Yukon Church Heritage Society. "This funding will enable us to construct an extraordinary travelling exhibit featuring the remarkable life of Bishop Isaac Stringer, his wife Sadie and their contribution to Yukon history. The Bishop Who Ate His Boots will include unique artifacts and address a variety of historical events during the late 1800's and early 1900's," executive director Marjorie Copp said.

"This exhibit will provide jobs for Yukon heritage workers and skill advancement opportunities while working with other museum professionals across Canada. I see this exhibit as a great Yukon ambassador, as it will have our virtual museum website to complement the exhibit and showcase the Yukon to the rest of the world."

The Bishop Who Ate His Boots  exhibit is scheduled to start travel in 2006.

A reminder that the deadline for Tier 1 and 2 Community Development Fund applications is May 13, 2005.
