Yukon Airports Receive $972,000 In Federal Funding
WHITEHORSE - The Government of Yukon welcomes the $972,000 in federal funding announced today for airport security fencing in Dawson City and Old Crow, Minister of Highways and Public Works Glenn Hart said.
Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre announced the funding under the airports capital assistance program while in Labrador City, Newfoundland.
"This announcement is very good news for residents of Dawson city, Old Crow and all Yukoners," Hart said. "This money will be used to improve safety at these airports and create jobs in these communities. The fencing will have a positive impact on air travelers, aircraft operators and the two communities."
The department will use the funds to install 4,000 metres of security fencing at the Dawson Cityairport and 2,010 metres of fencing at the Old Crow airport.
Airport users, inspectors and governments have been concerned about the safety of pedestrians and vehicles crossing the runways. This fencing is a safety measure that will prevent unauthorized use of the runways.
This project will create approximately 3,000 hours of employment in Dawson City and 1,500 hours in Old Crow. The government will purchase materials this year and install the fencing in Dawson City this summer and in Old Crow in the summer of 2006.
The fencing will meet national security and safety standards for these two airports for the foreseeable future. The installation of the fencing will not disrupt ongoing airport activities.
