New Model For Energy Solutions Centre To Improve Accountability

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is instituting changes to the Energy Solutions Centre that will ensure accountability, transparency and cost savings, Premier Dennis Fentie announced today.

"We will be altering the existing reporting structure of the Energy Solutions Centre to make certain that, henceforth, it will operate in an open, accountable and efficient manner," Fentie said.

The Energy Solutions Centre, which first opened its doors in 2001, will be separated from the control of the Yukon Development Corp. and will be transferred to the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.  The intended objectives of the centre will not change.

The Energy Solution Centre's storefront operation will now deliver its services under the administration of the department. It will continue to provide energy programs and carry out projects that lower energy costs and reduce green house gas emissions.

"As part of a government department, all Energy Solutions Centre expenditures and its budget will be debated and approved by the legislature," Fentie said. "This move gives us the ability to review and set program priorities on an annual basis, provide policy direction and eliminate duplication of any programs being carried out by other government departments."

It is expected that it will be several months before the transfer of the Energy Solutions Centre to the government is finalized.
