WHITEHORSE - Two Yukon school principals have been recognized for excellence by their peers for establishing deep, cultural change at school and creating successful partnerships that actively engage parents and the community.

John Wright, principal at Elijah Smith Elementary School and Thomas Jirousek, principal of Ross River School were both supported by their respective school communities in their application to the Canadian Association of Principals' Canada's Outstanding Principals Awards. Wright and Jirousek were supported by their teaching colleagues, Department of Education staff, school councilors and members of their communities.

"Nomination to the Canadian Association of Principals Awards is a tremendous honour for any principal," said Colin Kelly, Superintendent of Schools, "I commend both principals for the hard work that led to their nomination.”

Of the two school principals nominated for Canada's Outstanding Principals Awards, John Wright has been selected to travel to a unique leadership development forum from February 23-26 in Toronto. Wright will also be supported to continue his leadership journey over the following year through reflective dialogue with his colleagues from across the country.

"As a participant in this leadership forum, I think there is a lot that I will be able to bring back to the Yukon and share with other school administrators," said Wright, "I’m very happy to be put forward for Canadas Outstanding Principals Awards and would like to extend my congratulations to Thomas Jirousek. Mr. Jirousek has done wonderful things at Ross River School."

"Mr. Wright and Mr. Jirousek have made very significant contributions to their schools," said Education Minister, John Edzerza, "I commend them for their dedication to providing the best learning environment for all students."
