Yukon Opens Individual Learning Centre To Re-engage Youth

WHITEHORSE - In an effort to re-engage youth who have dropped out of school, the Yukon government will open the Individual Learning Centre (ILC) Feb. 1.

"The Individual Learning Centre is a flexible and safe learning environment where high school-aged youth who have dropped out of school can pick up their studies and complete their secondary education," Education Minister John Edzerza said.

"Helping youth who have dropped out of school get back into learning is a priority for this government. We want to provide them with another way to get the skills they need to participate effectively in work and in their community."

The ILC will be located at 407 Black Street and will be staffed by two full-time teachers and two remedial tutors. Approximately 40 students will study at the ILC on an ongoing basis and youth aged 15-21 who have dropped-out of the regular school system are encouraged to apply anytime.

"There are no set dates for enrolment into the Individual Learning Centre—students can join us at anytime," Bill Bennett, an ILC teacher/counselor said. "The school will offer a flexible, supportive environment to encourage students to continue working towards their high school diploma and ultimately to become lifelong learners."

Open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Individual Learning Centre will be able to accommodate students at all secondary grade levels. Students will be encouraged to study at their own pace and spend as much or as little time at the school as needed.

"Coming back to school is a significant commitment and we want to make that transition as smooth as possible for them," Bennett added.

In addition to following the standard curriculum, students at the ILC will be offered work experience opportunities and apprenticeship training opportunities that will count as credit towards high school graduation.
