Government of Yukon working to construct ice bridge in Dawson this winter

The Government of Yukon is working with a contractor to construct an ice bridge to span the Yukon River between Dawson and West Dawson this winter.

After the Yukon River remained open last winter, the government sought alternative options for constructing an ice bridge and inducing ice formation. Work on the ice bridge could start as early as January.

“It is important residents of West Dawson can access Dawson. As our climate changes, we are going to have to find innovative solutions to deal with the problems we face. This year, manufactured ice formation is a tool we will experiment with to help the residents of West Dawson.”

–Minister of Highways and Public Works Richard Mostyn

Quick facts

  • Last winter was the first time an ice bridge had not been constructed to West Dawson.
  • The typical ice bridge costs up to $80k to construct and maintain. This year’s ice bridge will cost approximately $200k to engineer, construct and maintain.
