Government of Yukon and First Nations wrap up fourth Yukon Forum of 2017

Yukon’s Premier, Cabinet members and First Nations Chiefs met today for the final Yukon Forum of 2017.

The leaders reviewed the implementation of the forum’s five-year action plan for addressing shared priorities, including a discussion of what has gone well and what can be improved in the coming year.

Having met four times this year, the leaders have fulfilled a commitment that was renewed under an intergovernmental declaration signed in January 2017. The parties agreed to continue their work together and have committed to meeting another four times over the course of 2018.

“My Ministers and I place great value on the strong government-to-government relations that have emerged from the Yukon Forum. Together, the Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations are taking significant action in the spirit of reconciliation. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far and I look forward to our continued collaboration.”

–Yukon Premier Sandy Silver

Quick facts

  • The Yukon Forum is a meeting of the political leaders of the Government of Yukon, Yukon First Nations governments and the Council of Yukon First Nations.
  • In January 2017, the forum was reinvigorated through the signing of an intergovernmental declaration that identified the creation of a joint five-year action plan on shared priorities. With the signing of this document, the parties also renewed their commitment to meet four times a year. This commitment was originally established by the 2005 Cooperation in Governance Act.
  • At the May 2017 Yukon Forum, leaders approved a list of joint priorities and committed to developing action plans for achieving these priorities.
  • These priorities include fiscal relations; collaborative processes for heritage, justice, education, health and social services; land claim and self-government implementation; and ensuring that the Government of Yukon’s legislative agenda considers First Nations’ priorities.
  • The joint priorities action plan was approved at the last Yukon Forum, in September 2017.
