Statement from the Government of Yukon regarding the decision in the Peel regional land use planning case

Premier Sandy Silver today issued a statement on the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision on the Peel regional land use planning case:

“The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision marks a pivotal point for our territory. I believe that when people look back at this moment, they will see it as the beginning of a new era for Yukon based on reconciliation.

“Today’s decision is a victory for Yukon. We now have the clarity needed to move forward with the Peel regional land use plan. We are excited to complete this process.

“The Peel has come to signify so much more than just a land use plan. It has been about a territory coming of age. We are still learning how to implement our modern treaties and I am confident that if we take this journey together, the results will benefit all Yukoners.

“The court has instructed us to return to the final plan presented by the planning commission. We have always said that had we been able to at the time, we would have accepted that plan. Now, together with First Nation governments, we have the ability to do so.

“Now that we have this clarity, we can work collaboratively and respectfully with First Nation governments in the spirit of reconciliation to implement the plan.

“We look forward to re-engaging with the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and the Gwich’in Tribal Council to implement a regional land use plan for the Peel.”
