Statement from Premier Silver on the passing of Regional Chief Mike Smith

Premier Sandy Silver released the following statement today:

“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Regional Chief Mike Smith. On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I send heartfelt condolences to his friends, family and community. Regional Chief Smith leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having contributed nearly four decades of knowledge and leadership to the territory.

“He served for many years as Chief of Kwanlin Dün First Nation where he was instrumental in bringing self-government to the nation, signing the Final and Self-Government Agreements in 2005. He went on to become the Yukon Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations in 2012, and was re-elected for another term in 2015.

“Regional Chief Smith is widely recognized as a dedicated leader who strived to ensure the priorities of Yukon First Nations were reflected on a national level. His work has had a profound influence on the territory, and he will be greatly missed.”
