A statement from Premier Sandy Silver on the swearing in of Governor General Julie Payette

The premier has issued the following statement regarding the swearing in of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada:

“It is with great pleasure that I join my fellow premiers and other distinguished guests as we congratulate Julie Payette on being sworn in today as the 29th Governor General of Canada.

“As a teacher, I saw first-hand the joy and excitement that the space program can evoke in our youth. I know that when Ms. Payette visited Yukon to speak in schools, she encouraged many to look at the night sky with renewed awe.

“From internationally-renowned scientist to musician, astronaut to scholar, Ms. Payette’s career could fill several lifetimes. She now has the honour of becoming one of Canada’s most distinguished officers, fulfilling her new responsibilities in our country and abroad.

“Most importantly, Ms. Payette will be a tremendous role model to young Canadians. Where she once inspired imaginations with her adventures, she will now inspire with her leadership and dedication to Canada.

“I am looking forward to a future opportunity to welcome her to Yukon in her capacity as Governor General.”
