The Government of Yukon and City of Whitehorse sign 2020 Arctic Winter Games MOU

Minister John Streicker and Mayor Dan Curtis formalized the partnership between the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse by signing a Memorandum of Understanding on the 2020 Arctic Winter Games today.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Whitehorse and Government of Yukon ensures that while Whitehorse is the host city of 2020 AWG, the Yukon government will contribute funding and be a full partner in hosting the games.

The Arctic Winter Games is an international, multi-sport, circumpolar event that serves as a venue for young northern athletes to compete against athletes from other northern jurisdictions. The event is a place for athletes to grow and develop and connect with northern, Arctic and Indigenous cultures.

“We're excited about sport! Hosting the Arctic Winter Games is important for the growth and development of young athletes from across the north. The Government of Yukon is proud to facilitate the games in Yukon through this agreement with the City of Whitehorse. We look forward to seeing the games in Whitehorse in 2020.”

–Minister of Community Services John Streicker

“We are pleased to sign this MOU with our partners at Yukon government today. The Arctic Winter Games provide an important sport development and cultural exchange opportunity for young athletes in Yukon and the circumpolar north. The benefits of hosting the games —including community development and economic impact for our local area — will be significant.”

–City of Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis
