Community Development Fund awards $131,000 for Yukon projects

The Government of Yukon awarded more than $131,000 to 10 community organizations through Tier 1 of the Community Development Fund (CDF). The approved Tier 1 projects will provide more than 2,000 hours of employment to approximately 16 people, contributing to the development of their communities.

Funding recipients for this January 2017 intake include Teslin Tlingit Council and the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay Association.

Quick facts

  • The Community Development Fund’s primary goal is to support projects that provide long-term benefits and value to Yukon communities. The projects are awarded based on merit and the ability to demonstrate social, cultural and economic benefits.
  • The Community Development Fund is divided into three tiers with five intake deadlines:
    • Tier I: Applications of $20,000 or less (intake deadlines in January, May, July and October). 
    • Tier II: Applications of $20,001 to $75,000 (intake deadline in May and September). 
    • Tier III: Applications of $75,001 or more (intake deadline in January).

CDF Tier I January 16, 2017 Intake Approved Projects

Teslin Tlingit Council - $9,382 – To install a dedication sign and host a grand opening ceremony for the newly built Fox Point Playground. The project will create 30 hours of employment for one person. Contact: Wes Wirth at (867) 390-2532.

Yukon Wildlife Preserve Operating Society - $3,679 – To hire a consultant to assist the Yukon Wildlife Preserve Operating Society to update and upgrade their safety policies and procedures to obtain Certificate of Recognition designation. Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay Association - $4,500 – To produce a high quality six-minute video celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Kluane to Chilkat International Bike Race. MusicYukon - $5,400 – MusicYukon will update its existing website into a professional, dynamic and accessible online hub to connect Yukoners working in the industry and drive the economic potential of Yukon's music sector. Ride for Dad Yukon - $16,782 – Ride for Dad Yukon will host the 2017 Ride for Dad National Summit in October providing an opportunity to increase awareness and healthcare options for men suffering from prostate cancer. Contact: Mike Thorpe at (867) 334-1036.

Challenge Disability Resource Group - $20,000 – To hire a consultant to develop a three-year strategic plan. The project will create 420 hours of employment for one person. Contact: Jillian Hardie at (867) 668-4421.

Yukon Council on Aging - $19,878 – To hire a consultant to develop the “Learning for Life” Program from its current conceptual framework and to plan the launch of the program at the 2017 International Day of Older Persons event in Whitehorse on October 1, 2017. Arctic Institute of Community Based Research - $20,000 - To hire a consultant to research, develop and produce a Food Charter for Whitehorse in consultation with stakeholders. The project will create 650 hours of employment for two people. Contact: Katelyn Friendship at (867) 668-3393.

Yukon Indian Hockey Association - $20,000 – Yukon Indian Hockey Association will hire a web developer to integrate online tools to enhance real time fan experience and a communications and marketing specialist to research and develop an improved sponsorship program. Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition - $11,750 – To develop a framework for a Community Dentistry Program that would support low income Yukoners without dental coverage. The framework will be based on research and consultations with stakeholders including service providers, service users and relevant government and front line services agencies.
