Legislative amendments will protect the rights of transgender Yukoners

Yukoners are invited to provide comments and feedback on proposed amendments to the Vital Statistics Act and the Human Rights Act.

These proposed legislative changes are part of the Government of Yukon's commitment to eliminate discrimination based on a person’s gender identity or gender expression.

  • Amendments to the Vital Statistics Act will remove the requirement for sex reassignment surgery before a person can change the gender on their birth registration.
  • Amendments to the Human Rights Act will prohibit discrimination on the grounds of both gender identity and gender expression.
  • Yukoners are invited to comment on a discussion document, which is available on the Health and Social Services and Justice websites. The consultation period ends on March 24.
  • These legislative amendments will be made during the upcoming sitting of the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
