WHITEHORSE—Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent is hosting forest ministers from across Canada this week for meetings on national and international issues regarding the stewardship and sustainable management of Canada's forests.
“Chairing the annual meeting of the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers is an excellent opportunity to connect with my colleagues and move forward on forest sector issues that are important to Yukoners and all Canadians,” Kent said.
Meeting topics include wildland fire, climate change, innovation, environmental performance and economic opportunities for remote communities.
The council will report progress on these initiatives following their discussions.
“I am pleased to host the meeting in beautiful Dawson City,” Kent added. “Dawson City has a strong history of forestry, from lumber mills during the gold rush right up to today’s successful use of local biomass for community heating infrastructure.”
The Canadian Council of Forest Ministers is a national forum to provide leadership and generate action on forestry-related matters. Each year, the role of chairing this council rotates across jurisdictions according to a pre-determined schedule.
